Lab Culture is a two-part exhibition, intended to bring forth the life and work at the National Center for Biological Sciences. NCBS is known for its dedicated research and practice of diverse fields of biological science but we know little of its cultural bearings. People, places and practices that define a cultural landscape, are also the driving force behind the groundbreaking work at NCBS. Through these two exhibitions, the curatorial exercise will engage its audiences in multi-layered narratives about behaviours and responses.

Seeing and Observing, Lines.

Seeing is an act of witnessing a larger horizon and its many textures and layers. The eyes dart around the viewing field.

Observing is an act of isolating a subject to carefully study its behaviour or structure.

What is a line? Does it occur naturally or is it made? How does one differentiate one that exists without having being made? Is a line observed or made?

For me seeing follows with an act of making. Everything starts and ends with a dot. A single dot; a spot from which many emerge, diverging into a group and becoming a line, taking over the space to make a form as it moves. This form may be perceived differently from many places; and then it starts to pick up a tone, contours itself with density to be made visible or brought to life only by light. In its absence it converges back into the dot.
